About Us
History
Our story starts way back, we are passionate about labour rights, consumer protection & legal aid.
Global workers and Environmental Rights Network (GLOWERN) is a member-based organization that brings together Labour, Environmental and consumer protection organizations and individual activists in the three thematic areas across the globe.
Originally GLOWERN existed as Global Horticultural Workers and Environmental Rights Network (GHOWERN) having been established in 2012 to address Labour and Environmental rights in the Global Horticultural sector. However, moved by the gross abuse of workers’ rights in other fields of employment both in the formal and informal sector, global supply chains, the increasing rise of new forms of employment across several industries, the rise and growth of the gig economy/digital Labour and the overall effects of globalization on employment, the need for continued support to Trade Unions to regain their full power for effective representation of workers; members decided to expand their scope to cover all sectors of employment across the globe.
Although for the entire period of its existence it simply operated as a network of registered member organisation, a decision was taken to have it registered and in early January 2020 GLOWERN got incorporated in Uganda with the main objective of mapping out unified lobbying and advocacy strategies against abuses and violations of workers, environment and consumer rights in all countries of its membership.
GLOWERN’s main objective is to defend and promote the rights of workers, consumers and for the preservation and protection of the environment through accessible justice, strategic research, advocacy, tree planting, strategic litigation and campaigns among others.
We are human and environmental rights defenders focusing on three core thematic areas that is; Labor rights, Consumer protection and Environmental conservation
